Stonework needs restoration or renovation to keep it in good condition. Over time, the weather and other environmental factors will cause stonework to spall, crumble, split or pit. So long as the damage can be caught early enough, it may be possible to renovate the original stone. If the damage is so severe that the stone has effectively rotted, a fuller restoration may be needed and individual stones be replaced with new stone.
